This issue we have selected the Milkweed Editions site for dual reasons, an
aesthetically pleasing layout along with creative utilization of the Internet
in advancing their mission. Upon first arrival at the site you
see
a wonderfully animated milkweed plant grow to full maturity and gracefully release
its pods off into cyberspace. We then move to the homepage where the mission
of Milkweed Editions reads, "Milkweed Editions is an award-winning, nonprofit
literary publisher of high-quality books that places an emphasis on cultural
diversity, environmental stewardship, exceptionally crafted poetry, and insightful
literature for adults and children in the middle grades".
Milkweed's Home Page is well organized and easy to maneuver. They offer a link to reading and teaching guides, "To make our books even more valuable for teaching and more enjoyable for reading discussion groups, we're pleased to offer the following guides and materials, free of charge." These materials are available for downloading via Adobe Acrobat, if you do not have Adobe Acrobat they provide you with the link and it too is free. The Milkweed site offers a wealth of information about their organization, the books they sell, where to buy them, the authors who write them and when and where to go to hear an author read. Along with all this they offer some unique "Internet specific" services. For example E-verse, "Enjoy a poem now and again? Up for a little heady commentary? In need of a lyrical break from the humdrum everyday world? Sign up for e-verse and you can enjoy all of this and more. E-verse is a free service from Milkweed Editions. Just subscribe yourself, and a friend if you like, to our electronic mailing list and you'll receive a new poem - current or classic - delivered to your desktop every Monday".
The Milkweed Award is another innovative and exciting way of sharing literature on the Internet. Here is what they say about it, "At Milkweed Editions, our goal is to propagate the unique and beautiful, to encourage literature that promotes both personal reflection and cultural action. While we publish books, we recognize the growing impact of the Internet and realize that what is considered literature in the future may not be strictly bound by the traditions of the past. The Milkweed Award for On-line Literary Excellence is an honor given by the editors and staff of Milkweed Editions to outstanding efforts in electronic publishing which promote the goals of quality literature as a transformative art form. Nominees can include websites, newsgroups, or other material distributed primarily via the Internet. We are currently accepting nominations for our inaugural award! Please send your nominations to: award@milkweed.org.
