I am sure you have heard about the staffing changes that have taken place at MTN and I thought it was about time that I actually introduced myself and let you know the status of MTN / The River Project. My name is Mark Lutgen and I was hired in early November to be the new System Administrator for MTN/The River Project. Since the date of my hire many events have transpired but the good news is that all is under control. In fact, I think we have made many positive changes and additions. Not too long after I was hired MTN also hired another person, Mike DeLosier (miked@mtn.org), with whom I share the responsibilities of System Administration. He is a great guy with a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience concerning the Internet. Both Mike and myself share in the job of answering your questions and assisting you in the difficulties you might be having trying to connect to us.
Let me tell you a bit about myself before I let you know about the improvements at MTN/The River Project. I have been a computer geek since about 1990 and took a particular interest in the Internet (and subsequently the World Wide Web) in 1992. I have had a fair amount of course work in computer programming and have worked professionally as a World Wide Web Developer and Programmer, with special interests in using the Internet to make information accessible to all, especially those who would not normally have access to it, as well as using the breakthroughs in modern technology to advance computer-mediated distance learning. It is because of these two interests that I wanted to work at MTN - essentially helping civic and non-profit organizations to get online and make themselves known to the world around them. I do want to assist you in your use of the Internet and World Wide Web: to help advance the mission of MTN, which is one of service to and for the community. I work at MTN Mon - Fri 10-6. If you have any questions of comments, please feel free to either send me E-mail (mark@mtn.org) or call Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
What's New and Exciting:
* Recently, we have added 7 new modems to our rack. I hope this will help to alleviate the busy signals some of you may have received.
* There is a new Webserver in town. We just bought a DEC Alpha (with 64 Megabytes RAM and a 2 Gigabyte Hard drive) which we hope to bring online very soon. Hopefully, this will allow us to better our web-hosting capabilities and improve our service to you.
* Effective 1/1/97, we revised our service list, which we would be happy to fax to you upon request or you can visit our site at mtn.org. We are still offering Internet classes (Internet 101, 102, Basic HTML, Advanced HTML and more) along with the classes in video production. If you are thinking about doing some work on your Web site or would like to learn how to better utilize the World Wide Web or E-mail, I would recommend that you check these out. You can find our current class schedule online at our World Wide Web Site (http://www.mtn.org) or just give us a call and we can either fax, mail, or e-mail them out to you.
* Mike DeLosier, my co-worker, is almost finished with a new software package for all of The River Project users. It should effectively eliminate the need for a manual login as well as to improve the efficiency of your modem (PPP) connection with us. We are hoping that it will be ready and available sometime in early February 97.
We will keep you posted via E-mail when this is finalized.
In the not-so-distant future, I will be sending to you periodic E-mails to keep you informed about upgrades and events here at MTN / The River Project.
