Playback is a Hit! Continued from front page....

Most of the equipment from the old playback system was moved and rewired in its new location, though some new equipment was added. The new system used just shy of a mile of audio cable, over 1100 cable I.D. tags, and the master prints of the system, which track each wire and component, will fill 14 sheets of paper.
According to Derks, the most important feature of the revamped system is its openness. The old system in the long narrow room had only 17" behind the equipment for wiring and looking for problems. The new system has three feet of room or more to work in. "It makes it easier for someone who's somewhat far-sighted - it's easier to focus," Jim said.
Another feature of the system is that it is possible to run the system from a wheelchair. The switches and decks are lower down and unified by channel, rather than scattered from the top to the bottom and even on top of racks, as in the old system.
The new system features two quad split monitors: two monitors split into four images - so that the cablecaster can monitor eight video signals at once. The environment of the space is greatly improved as well. The spaciousness and accoustics of the room make it a better work environment and the cablecasters now have control of the air conditioning of the room, which they did not have in the old space.
The system also features a new unified C.G. system. In the old system, several different computers and software in several different locations ran the information between programs. Now there are six P.C. computers running the Scala program to do the majority of C.G. work. One monitor, one keyboard and one mouse combined with a switcher works to operate all the P.C.'s. "The system is upgradable and adaptable," Derks said.

A Rebuilt system, Not a new system
Though this rebuilt playback system is a wonderful change, it is not a long term solution to MTN's playback needs. As Jim stressed in his article in the last issue of the Monitor, "This is not a full rebuild, only a temporary fix to keep [playback] going a few more years."
During July and August, Jim spent most of his time at the Paragon building, working on playback. In those two months equipment needing repairs piled up in his office at Saint Anthony Main. Art Roy helped out quite a bit in MTN's equipment repair needs, but as Derks put the finishing touches on playback, he estimated that he was "about a week behind" in work on repairing the camera, editing and studio equipment at MTN's production end.
"I dropped six pounds from all the getting down and up from the floor," Jim said, adding that he cut himself three times and burned himself twice on the project. But his work on rebuilding the system will make his work maintaining it much easier. "In the old system, fixing a problem led to making other problems," because of the inefficient way the system was constructed.
The playback operators are united in their approval of the new system. "It's an astronomical improvement," cablecaster Mike Johnson said.
The most surprising thing about the playback rebuild, Jim said, was how everything worked out pretty much as planned. He added that the work would have taken him a month longer if not for the help he received from Nate Mains and Timm McCoy, who put in many hours assisting him in the work.
"It's been a dream for thirteen years to build a playback system that's functional" Derks said. And finally, that dream is five tall racks of reality.
