For the third time in the past five years, MTN was named "Best TV Station" by the City Pages newspaper in their annual "Best of the Twin Cities" edition. MTN also received this honor in 2000 and 2001.

In their blurb about MTN, the writers from the City Pages said, "MTN makes you feel plugged into some manic, grungy, 3:00 a.m. collective unconscious, where the obsessed and the exhibitionists, the damned and the sleepless, surf along on the hum of static."

MTN program "Somali TV" was also honored as "Best Public Access TV program." "Somali TV" is produced twice weekly by MTN member Abdulkadir Osman (read his interview in the June-July 2002 edition of the Monitor, available on the MTN website, mtn.org).

In their article about "Somali TV," the City Pages writers said, "For some, public access is an early, inspiring lesson in democracy and free media. As longtime MTN producer, Tarek 'JC' Bagdadi, recently told us, 'How can we tell that this country is still democratic? The first thing a dictator may do is close down public access.'”
